Abstract
In Egypt, clay bricks industry is achieved by using mazout as a fuel in clay kilns, which has low cost but causes high pollution. Also by using the natural gas, which causes much lower pollution but has higher cost. AI-Nasr Company for Coke and Essential Chemicals is located near by hundreds of such kilns. The company produces an exessive amount of coke oven gas, which is the second product in importance after coke in the material balance of high-temperature coking of coal. The yield of coke oven gas is approximately 14-15 % of the charge. Its relatively high calorific value (4200 Kcal/mᶟ) permits its use almost universally as a fuel. The presence in coke oven gas of hydrogen is ≈ 60% , methane is ≈ 25% and the rest is heavy hydrocarbons dictates its value as power fuel. Approximately 86% of the coke oven gas is used as a fuel in the coke oven, the superabundance quantity of coke oven gas is burned in air without any benefit. So, one of the proposed solutions is to use coke oven gas to replace mazout in bricks industry. The success of using coke oven gas in bricks industry has a strong effect in decreasing air pollution and has a powerful push for the environmental protection for reduction the thermal emission in El-Tebbin area. Other benefit of using coke oven gas is decreasing the production cost in bricks companies (about 288000 LE/ year) due to its lower price compared with the natural gas price. This will also have economical revenue for EI-Nasr Company for Coke and Essential Chemicals (about 2400000 LE/ year) by selling it instead of burning it in air without any benefit. So, this research investigated the use of coke oven gas (COG) to make the clay brick firing curve, its performance analysis and study the effect of its combustion products on the environment.
