Abstract

Broad bean is one of the most important crops in Egypt. It constitute a part of the most popular meal for most of the people. Under the favourable conditions chocolate spot disease of broad bean can cause sever damage and yield losses of the crops. Thus this work aimed at surveying a range of egyptian and British bean cultivars for sources of resistance. The production of toxic substances by B. fabae and B. cinerea as a mechanism of infection was studied. In addition, studies on the nature of the toxin molecules were carried out. In the absence of the natural variability in resistance of broad bean to chocolate spot, tissue culture techniques were used in this study with aim of generating novel sources of resistance.
