Abstract
”Background: Ilizarov external fixation had been the gold standard for treatment of many types of fracture and bone deformity. An essential aspect of a successful treatment plan is the maintenance of stability and utilizing of the Ilizarov external fixation through designing guidelines that educate patient regarding self-care practice. The nurses must be competent to perform the education that satisfies the patients’ needs and enhance self-care. Aim: Evaluate effect of Ilizarov nursing care guidelines on Nurses’ competency and patients self-care. Design: A quasi-experimental research design was utilized. Setting: Orthopedic units at main Mansoura University Hospital. Subject: Convenient sample of 50 orthopedic nurses and a purposive sample of 40 patients after Ilizarov fixation divided in to two equal groups control and study group. Tools: (I) A structured nurse’s questionnaire sheet. (II) Ilizarov nurses observation checklist. (III): Structured patients’ interview questionnaire. (IV) Ilizarov patient self-care. Results: The present study indicated that, the majority of nurses had good level of knowledge and satisfactory level of practice post-guidelines implementation. There was positive correlation between total level of knowledge and total level of practices, in pre/ post a guidelines implementation and at follow up. Also, The majority of the study group of patients had satisfactory level of knowledge and self-care practice post guidelines implementation, there were an improvement in activity of daily living of study group and statistically significant positive correlation between study group total knowledge, total practice, LEFI and MBI .Conclusion: The designed Ilizarov nursing guidelines have achieved their objectives by improving nurses knowledge and practice, in addition to improving patient knowledge and self-care practice for the study group compared with the control group. Recommendations: Availability of written guidelines regarding Ilizarov nursing care in orthopedic units. Training and education for nurses regarding Ilizarov nursing care in orthopedic units. Availability of standardized colored booklet about Ilizarov self-care guidelines for patients.
