Abstract

Healthcare professionals and patients can access information through work- related social media utilization, which may have altered how they communicate. Social media, when utilized responsibly, may offer clear benefits including professional networking, educational opportunities, and patient wellness awareness. Social media can have drawbacks, though, such the potential to violate patient privacy and confidentiality when used carelessly, which can have serious repercussions. So, it is crucial for healthcare professionals, specifically new members of the nursing profession, to be informed about the rules, national laws, and policies that regulate the utilization of work-related social media at work. Workplace social media usage has developed into an issue that has both beneficial and harmful effects on work productivity, can be affected by workplace fulfillment, and is getting harder to monitor and control as nurses utilize more portable and smaller devices.
Aim of the study:
The aim of the current study was to identify the beneficial and harmful effects of work-related social media utilization and its relationship with work productivity among nurses.
Setting of the study:
This study was conducted at Kafr El-Sheikh University Hospital. This hospital is affiliated with the Ministry of Higher Education and provides public non-paid health services with a bed capacity of 340 beds. It is the largest educational university hospital in Kafr El-Sheikh, equipped with the latest international equipment and instruments, computer devices, and free internet access in all departments. The hospital is in the preparatory phase to get accreditation from the General Authority for Health Care Accreditation and Regulation (GAHAR) in 2024. The study was conducted at all critical care units (N=6) namely, CCU, Medical ICU, Surgical ICU, Pediatric ICU, Neonate ICU, and Chest ICU.
Subjects of the study:
The study subjects included all staff nurses (N=137) who worked in the previously mentioned units and did not provide any administrative activities. They were divided into (N=124) professional nurses and (N=13) technical nurses.
Tools:
The researcher applied 2 tools as follows:
Tool I: The Work-Related Social Media Questionnaire (WSMQ):
It was developed by Landers & Callan (2014) to assess the degree to which nurses were using social media in the workplace. In the current study, the long form of the scale (36 items) was adopted by the researcher. It consisted of two subscales.
The first subscale: beneficial WSMQ. It consisted of 18 items classified into eight dimensions as follows; information gathering (2 items), communicate with existing client (2 items), new customer/client outreach (2 items), crowd sourcing (2 items), intra-office communication (2 items), participation in online work community (2 items), organizational reputation management (4 items), social media as technical solution (2 items). Nurses’ responses were evaluated on a 5-point Likert scale ranging from strongly disagree =1 to.
