Abstract Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder of unknown etiology characterized by symmetric erosive synovitis, and in some cases extra articular involvement. It is a chronic, progressive, debilitating disease demanding continuous therapy with multiple medications. Efficient management of RA significantly reduces long-term functional disability .With respect to treatment for RA, drug efficacy and patient compliance with the treatment prescribed are equally important. Family physicians play an important role in monitoring disease progression and response to treatment, as well as managing co morbidities, in conjunction with the treating rheumatologist and other members of the multidisciplinary team. The aim of this study was to review the role of FPs in screening, prevention and management of Rheumatoid Arthritis patient. The findings of the present study could be used to improve the quality of RA patients` care in family medicine. More focus should be directed on awareness of patients about the importance of adherence to treatment and the complications that may result from non adherence. Also increasing clinics working hours and providing the medications through insurance pharmacies help the patients to improve the outcome of the disease. |
