Abstract Enlarged, palpable lymph nodes are common due to the reactive hyperplasia of lymphatic tissue mainly connected with local inflammatory process. Ultrasonography is an important imaging modality readily available in most centers and allow the use of multimodal techniques with sonographic criteria with the appropriate clinical history can differentiate benign from malignant lymph nodes. These modalities include the characteristic gray-scale and color & power Doppler sonographic features inaddition to elastography. The gray scale criteria include size, shape, margins, hilum, and nodal echogenicity, whereas color Doppler criteria include vessel location and flow impedance values. Other features can provide helpful diagnostic clues to differentiate benign from malignant nodes include necrosis, abnormally hyperechoic appearance, calcifications or microcalcifications and the “pseudocyst” appearance. |
