Abstract

DLBCL is the most common form of NHL, and is characterized by clinical and genetic heterogeneity. It is subclassified by Gene expression profiling (GEP) into mainly the germinal center B cell (GCB)-like, and the activated B cell (ABC)-like. Hepatitis C virus is currently an endemic infection in Egypt, with a high prevalence in the world. Hepatitis C virus infection plays a role in lymphomagenesis by affecting many cellular responses.
Notch is a family of transmembrane receptors and ligands that facilitates cell to cell communication. It is an evolutionarily conserved signaling system. Differentiation, proliferation, and death are just a few of the numerous facets of cell biology that this highly coordinated signaling system regulates. In addition to hematologic malignancies, it has been suggested that deregulation of the Notch pathway contributes to the pathogenesis of a number of solid tumors.
The purpose of this study was to determine the diagnostic and prognostic significance of Notch-2 gene mutation in DLBCL patients coinfected with hepatitis C virus, genotype4. Moreover, this study evaluated the HCV viral load as well as Ki67 as an indicator of cell proliferation.
The current study involved 40 newly diagnosed DLBCL, 20 of them HCV positive and 20 HCV negative hospitalized to the hematology unit or who visited the hematology and medical oncology outpatient clinics at the Alexandria Main University Hospital.
