Abstract

Background: Chemomechanical caries removal systems have emerged as a possible valuable alternative to conventional rotary caries removal techniques in pediatric patients. Carie-Care™ is an economically minimally invasive approach which selectively removes caries infected tissue leaving the caries affected tissue to conserve tooth structure.
Aim: This study aims to clinically evaluate the effectivness of chemomechanical method of caries removal (Carie-Care™) over mechanical caries removal through the Atraumatic Restorative Technique in pediatric patients.
Subjects: Forty-eight children, each with open carious lesions fulfilling inclusion criteria will be selected from the outpatient clinic of Pediatric and Dental Public health department, Faculty of Dentistry, Alexandria University.
Materials and Methods: The study is a randomized controlled clinical trial, where children with open carious lesions will be divided into 2 equal groups according to the method of caries removal. In group I, caries will be removed using the Carie-Care™ system and in group II by mechanical caries removal through atraumatic restorative technique. Teeth will be restored with resin modified glass ionomer, the two techniques will be compared in each child according to time taken for caries removal, efficacy of caries removal, pain assessment, and child behavior.
Results: Data collected will be coded and analyzed by appropriate statistical tests using the SPSS (version 25) software.
Keywords: Atraumatic Restorative Technique, Carie-Care™, primary teeth.
