Abstract

In order to enhance fennel and pea crops growth and productivity, field experiment was done at a privet Farm, Elquran, Abo-Hamad District, Sharkia Governorate, Egypt, during the two winter consecutive seasons of 2019/2020 and 2020/2021. The main objective of this search was to investigate growth, yield components and some chemical constituents as well as competitive indices of fennel and pea as affected by intercropping systems and nitrogen fertilization rate and their combination treatments. This experiment included 20 treatments, which were the combinations between five intercropping systems and four nitrogen fertilizer rates. Respecting fennel plants, the interaction between intercropping patterns 1:3 (1 ridge fennel: 3 ridges pea) and N at 90 kg /feddan increased total dry weight/plant, total chlorophyll, increased number of umbels/ plant and fruit yield/plant, volatile oil percentage, volatile oil yield/plant also recorded maximum values of N, P, K total protein and total carbohydrates in fennel fruits whereas, the interaction between sole fennel (recommended pattern) and N at 60 kg/feddan increased fruit yield/feddan. On the other side, intercropping pattern 1:1 and N at 90 kg N/feddan gave the highest values of land equivalent ratio, area× time equivalent ratio and land utilization efficiency of both crops. As for pea plants. The interaction between intercropping patterns 2:2 (growing two ridges of fennel alternating with two ridges of pea) and N at 45 kg/feddan increased total chlorophyll in leaf tissues of pea, number of seeds per pod, 100 seeds weight, number of green pods/plant, N, P, K, total protein and total carbohydrates in seeds of pea, whereas the interaction between intercropping pattern 1:1 (growing 1 ridge of fennel alternating with 1 ridge of pea) and N at 90 kg /feddan increased number of green pods/ plant. Feddan (4200 m2 = 0.42 hectare).
