Abstract

Subjective wellbeing for those who have schizophrenia is very important as their affective experiences and overall emotional wellbeing are central to their quality of life as individuals. One of the biggest challenges facing patients with schizophrenia is impaired subjective wellbeing and quality of life. Low level of subjective wellbeing leads to increased psychological distress, increased depressive symptoms, difficulties in self- esteem, lack of satisfaction, increased conflict and suffering. Depressive symptoms adds to the extensive burden of schizophrenia and its management is crucial to recovery. all of this reflecting a bad quality of life among patients with schizophrenia. Recurrent depressive episodes adversely affect treatment outcomes in schizophrenia, devastate the lives of sufferers as well as their caregivers via increasing distress, disability, and reduced productivity. Aim of the study The present study was carried out to assess the relation between depressive symptoms and subjective wellbeing among patients with schizophrenia Research Question: 1- What are the levels of depressive symptoms in patients with schizophrenia? 2- What are the levels of subjective well- being in patients with schizophrenia? 3- What is the relationship between depressive symptoms and subjective well- being in patients with schizophrenia Research design The descriptive correlational design was utilized to achieve the aim of the study. Research setting This study was conducted at Shebin Elkom psychiatric hospital (Meet khalaf psychiatric hospital 67 Subjects: A purposive sample of 148 patients who will have the following criteria; patient above 18 years old, diagnosed with schizophrenia, taking antipsychotic drugs, with no history of drug use disorder and willing to participate in the study. Data Collection Instruments: - Three Instruments were used for data collection Instrument (1) A Structured Socio-demographic Questionnaire: The questionnaire was developed by the researcher to assess socio demographic characteristics of the subjects. Instrument (2) Depressive symptoms scale: The Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia (CDSS) was originally developed by Addington et al, (1990) and translated into Arabic by Hani et al, (2016). It is used to measure depressive symptoms of patients with schizophrenia. Instrument (3) Subjective well-being scale under Neuroleptics (short form) (SWN K) The SWN-K was developed by (Naber et al, 2001), translated into Arabic by researcher and validated by a jury of five professors in psychiatric Nursing and psychiatric medicine. It used to assess subjective wellbeing among patients with schizophrenia  The main findings of the study revealed the following: • The mean age of the studied patients with schizophrenia was 28.2 ± 2.5 years. • The vast majority of the studied patients (92.6%) with schizophrenia had low level of subjective wellbeing followed by (7.4%) had moderate level of subjective depressive episode. • Approximately (96.8%) of patients with schizophrenia who had depressive episode had low subjective wellbeing. • Approximately (84.1%) of male patients with schizophrenia had depressive episode. education. • About (93.8%) of male patients with schizophrenia had low subjective wellbeing • About (89.7%) of patients with depressive episode was single • There was a significant relationship between depressive symptoms and subjective wellbeing among patients with schizophrenia • There was a negative significant correlation between total depressive symptoms score and subjective wellbeing score  Based on the findings of the current study, it can be concluded that • There was a negative significant correlation between depressive symptoms and subjective wellbeing among patients with schizophrenia.  Based on the findings of the present study, the following recommendations are suggested: 1- Establish comprehensive intervention programs to improve depressive symptoms and
subjective wellbeing among patients with schizophrenia. 2- Establish an educational program for psychiatric nurses to teach them how to improve depressive symptoms and subjective wellbeing among patients with schizophrenia. 3- Increasing the community awareness about the needs and problems of psychiatric patients especially patients with schizophrenia, how to adjust with it and to make an appropriate referral and the available community mental health services. 4- Emphasizing on the need to focus on improving the environment and support systems for patients with schizophrenia.  In further research: 1. Replication of the study using a larger sample in different settings for further confirmation and generalizability of the results. 2. A similar type of study can be conducted for the patients with other psychiatric disorders 3. A comparative study can be conducted between different types of mental disorders.
