Abstract

Background: Childhood negative experiences affect adolescent personality trait and are linked to poorer physical and mental health. The present study aims to investigate the relation between childhood negative experiences and personality trait among Port Said university students. Subjects and Method: Design: A descriptive correlational research design was utilized. Setting: The study was carried out across all 13 faculties at Port Said University. Subjects: A purposive sample of 716 students from all faculties was included in the study. Tools: Two tools were used for data collection: (1) Childhood Negative Experiences Scale to assess negative childhood experiences, (2) The Big Five Inventory to measure the Big Five dimensions of personality trait (Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Neuroticism, and Openness), in addition to personal characteristics structured sheet of the studied university students. The Results: there was a statistically significant negative correlation between the total score of childhood negative experiences and extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness personality trait. While there was a statistically significant positive correlation between the total score of childhood negative experiences and neuroticism personality trait. Conclusion: It can be concluded that near to half of the studied university students had average childhood negative experiences and approximately half of the studied sample had neuroticism personality trait. Recommendations: The study recommended that, designing and implementing an educational program for new parents to avoid childhood negative experiences which affect negatively on their children’s personality trait. Faculties should provide guidance and counseling for university students about coping strategies with childhood negative experiences.
