Abstract

English Abstract
Alhagi maurorum is a plant belonging to family Fabaceae. The current study investigated the hepatoprotective effects of A.maurorumcrude extract and its fractionsagainst paracetamol-induced liver toxicity in experimental rats. The most pronounced improvement in histopathological features and biochemical parameters was detected in the group that received 25% methanol/ dichloromethanefraction. The total phenolics and flavonoids were measured in Alhagi maurorumcrude extract and its fractions. The obtained results revealed that the 25% methanol/ dichloromethanefraction was the richest one of the total phenolics 18.96 ± 0.82 mg.gallic acid equivalent/gm and the total flavonoids 69.85 ± 2.07 mg.quercetin equivalent/gm. Results of 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging assay also showed that the 25% methanol/ dichloromethanefraction is the most active fraction compared to others with IC50 = 126.3 ±2.17 µg/mL. Therefore the 25% methanol/dichloromethanefractionwas subjected to LC/MS/MS analysis for phytochemical investigation, which revealed that flavonoids were the most predominant chemical class. Moreover, five known compounds were isolated from the plant, which were identified as lupeol (1), kaempferol (2), p- coumaric acid (3), luteolin (4) and quercetin (5).
In addition, the antimicrobial and antifungal activities of A.maurorum crude extract and its different fractions were tested against an array of pathogens showed that 75% dichloromethane/hexane,100%dichloromethaneand25%methanol/ dichloromethanefractions have antifungal effect againt Candida albicans.
Key words: Alhagi maurorum, hepatoprotective, LC/MS/MS, antioxidant, flavonoids, antimicrobial and antifungal.
