Abstract

Wind energy is a form of renewable energy that uses wind turbines to generate electricity. Wind turbines convert the kinetic energy of the wind into mechanical power, which is then converted into electricity through a generator. Wind energy is one of the fastest-growing sources of electricity in the world, and it is becoming increasingly cost-competitive with traditional sources of energy such as fossil fuels. Wind energy has the potential to play a significant role in meeting global energy demand while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating climate change. This thesis proposes a comprehensive approach for the optimal location and size of two wind farms in a transmission network taking into account several objectives associated with economic, losses, voltage profile, and environmental impact represented in carbon emissions reduction. The overall optimization problem is solved by using the particle swarm optimization algorithm and Newton Raphson method for Load flow analysis. MATLAB has been formulated to evaluate their performance with varying capacities at different locations in the system. The proposed approach has been validated on the standard IEEE 14-bus and 30-bus transmission systems. This thesis managed to find the optimal allocation of two wind farms that were targeted which meets all the mentioned objectives.
