Abstract This study aims to investigate the language of two plays: Arms and the man and Man and Superman written by George Bernard Shaw and examine how the characters use implicature to convey their messages. It illustrates the use of speech act verbs by the characters in both plays. The study assumes that the characters do not always follow the four Gricean maxims: Quantity, Quality, Manner, and Relation. They sometimes violate the maxims to convey a certain message. The researcher follows a mixed approach (qualitative/quantitative approach) to collect the data. The data are some examples taken from both plays and they are particularly chosen because the characters convey their messages implicitly by violating the conversational maxims. Moreover, they make use of Speech act verbs to create implicature. The results of the study show that the characters often violate the conversational maxims to drag the listener`s attention to a particular point in the conversation. In Arms and the man, the most frequently violated maxim is the maxim of quantity and the least violated one is that of relation. In Man and Superman, the most frequently violated maxim is the maxim of manner and the least violated one is that of relation. Furthermore, the characters make use of speech act verbs to create implicatures. |
