Abstract

The current study aims to investigate two common strategies ”domestication and foreignization” used in rendering cultural-specific items, in general, and metaphors, in particular, in The Map of Love by Ahdaf Soueif. This study sheds light on how the translator, Fatma Moussa, domesticated and foreignized cultural based metaphors by adopting Venuti’s(1995) model of domestication and foreignization and Newmark’s typology of metaphors (1988). To reach an accurate and adequate translation, it is hypothesized that the translator as a mediator should master the cultures of both the source and the target texts. The study’s hypothesis demonstrates how successful the translator is in rendering the linguistic denotation and maintaining the cultural connotation of cultural specific items/metaphors.
