Abstract

This cross-sectional study was conducted on 120 allergic children (6-12 years), 64.2% were males and 35.8% were females, recruited during their follow up visits at the Allergy, Immunology and Rheumatology Unit, Children’s Hospital, Ain Shams University, over a period of 6 months, from May 2022 to November 2022. Age and sex matched healthy control group was recruited from the Outpatients Clinic, Children’s Hospital, Ain Shams University, presented with minor illnesses. Patients with major sensory and motor disorders and Patients with metabolic diseases were excluded.
The association between allergic symptoms and emergence of ADHD symptoms was evaluated. All enrolled patients were subjected to full history taking regarding socio- demographic data, allergic disease data and thorough clinical examination. Medical records were revised for eosinophilic count, skin prick test, and total IgE results. ADHD symptoms were screened using DSM-V criteria for ADHD, conners scale and strengths and difficulties questionnaire (SDQ).
We found that ADHD symptoms were more prevalent in allergic patients compared to healthy control. Allergic patients had significantly higher behavioral and emotional problems through using SDQ, more emotional problems, conduct problems and hyperactivity problems. Evaluation with Conners’ scale, allergic patients had more oppositional, inattentive, hyperactive, anxious, perfectionism, psychosomatic, social problems and emotional liability. This study was limited by the small number of patients.
