Abstract Water shortage is an issue that threatens the world, and desalination technologies are necessary. Different water desalination methods were stated and classified, and the operation of the most important desalination technologies was illustrated briefly, along with their power consumption and limitations. This thesis focuses on capacitive deionization (CDI), which is an electrical separation method. Capacitive deionization’s operation, conditions, and limitations were illustrated; the application of such technology either as a standalone system or a hybrid system was mentioned; and the electrical representation of a CDI cell was also stated. A survey of step-down DC-DC converters was given, along with their operation and limitations. The quartic buck converter is proposed to electrify the CDI system, which is an extension of the quadratic buck converter. A comparison between both converters is mentioned. The analysis of the proposed quartic buck converter in continuous conduction mode (CCM) is presented for a resistive load, as well as a design example of the quartic buck converter in CCM. In addition, the discontinuous current mode (DCM) of the first stage of the proposed quartic buck converter is investigated and the gain equation is simplified using MATLAB. Moreover, simulation results are discussed to evaluate the performance of the proposed quartic buck converter using PSCAD/EMDC and MATLAB/Simulink under a resistive load and a CDI load. Furthermore, an experimental prototype is developed to verify the analysis and the dynamic performance of the proposed quartic buck converter. |
