Sport plays an important role in the lives of peoples from a long time ago and still is until the present time, which resulted in this interest including women and that was since the time of the ancient Egyptians and the Greeks.
Sports is an educational process that works on refining the personality of the individual through the practice of sports activities, which is reflected in social upbringing and giving the individual the values and educational standards. The prevailing cultural heritage that does not recognize any role for women outside the circle of motherhood, the family and the home.
However, as a result of the development of the requirements of life, women have become involved in building society, as they have a positive and effective role in various fields, just like men, and they are not satisfied with this role, but continue their struggle to obtain their right to practice and compete in all sports activities and competitions.

Based on the foregoing, specialized institutes in the sciences of physical education and sports were established, where women were allowed to join them for the first time, and that was in 1937, when they were a section at the Princess Fawzia School for Girls in Bulaq. This step was considered a great progress for Egyptian women at that time, as they were As an encouragement to her and giving her enough opportunity to prove her superiority in sports competitions.
Second: the research problem
In view of the importance of sports for Egyptian women, the researcher noticed that the sports programs presented by Egyptian television in its official channels do not give women sports a sufficient number of hours, nor do they include all sports activities practiced by Egyptian women, as noted when presenting sports programs for women. The absence of a program provider specializing in women’s sports.
The researcher also noticed that the impact of women’s participation in international and Olympic sports competitions is no less important than the impact of men. USA, Canada, many European countries and China. where the sports teams of these countries are made up of boys and girls.
Hence the role of this TV program specialized in women’s sports to help women actively participate in sports, make them enjoy playing sports, educate them on the importance of sports in order to maintain their health and physical fitness, and use their free time in a positive way, as well as to clarify a new vision for women’s sports for women in Egypt. Research importance and need:
This research derives its importance from several considerations that can be presented as follows:
1- Spreading women’s sports further and achieving the best results in future international tournaments.
2- Knowing the role that the TV program will play in serving women’s sports and its impact on encouraging women to practice sports.
3- Knowing the content of the news presented about women’s sports and the extent of the TV program’s interest in presenting it.
4- The importance of the proposed television program in meeting the needs of Egyptian women in the field of sports.
5- Working to spread women’s sports in society as a whole in order to preserve women’s health and bring women’s sports to the global and Olympic level.
6- Knowing the history of Egypt’s female champions in sports, communicating with them, and hosting them in the program to learn about their journey in sports and benefit from their experiences in the sports field.
Research aims:
The current research aims to develop a sports program presented by the Egyptian TV for Egyptian women.
Research questions:
1- What are the procedures and steps followed to create a television program for women’s sports?
2- What are the gratifications achieved by women watching sports programmes?
3- How can women’s sports needs be met?
4- What is the role of TV programs in spreading women’s sports events in Egypt?
Research procedures:
The research procedures included the following:
First: the research method
The researcher used the descriptive approach, as it is appropriate to the nature of the research.
Second: the research community and sample
The research community included three governmental Egyptian TV channels, in addition to the Nile Sports channel. The researcher chose these four channels in an intentional manner:
Channel One, Channel Two, Channel Three, Nile Sports Channel
In addition, the researcher selected (20) workers in sports programs in the four channels, as the main sample included (15) individuals, in addition to (5) who are the reconnaissance sample. Thus, the total sample of workers in sports programs is (20) individuals representing presenters and broadcasters. Directors and producers of sports programs in the aforementioned channels. The research also included a deliberate sample of the women and girls who watch sports programmes, the number is (40) women and girls, and they are participants in the national project for women in the Directorate of Youth and Sports in Qalyubia Governorate.
Third: Data collection tools
The researcher used the following tools to collect data and information:
A. Examination of previous studies and research related to the topic of the current research, as well as access to scientific sources on the relationship of sports to the media, and the researcher also used the international information network (the Internet) in this subject.
B. Personal interview:
The researcher visited the four channels of the research community, and the interview included:
Sports presenters
Sports program directors
Sports programmer
The interview aimed to answer the following questions:
1)Are there sports programs for women?
2)What is the time period for these programmes?
3) What is the nature and content of the programs offered?
C. Analyzing and evaluating the offered programs:
The researcher analyzed the sports programs and studied the current situation of these programs offered by the four programs in order to identify the following:
Program broadcast timing
Program broadcast duration
Repeat broadcast programs
Goals of these programmes
D. Steps for preparing the proposed TV program for women’s sports
The procedures and steps for establishing the proposed TV program for women’s sports included the following:
Step (1):-
Analysis of sports programs offered by Egyptian TV at the present time in terms of (program content, timing and duration of transmission).
Step (2):-
Determine the objective of the proposed program so that it becomes a way of life for women through their continuous viewing of it and their constant knowledge of what this program offers.
Step (3):
Determine the characteristics of the proposed program
Step (4):-
Preparation of the questionnaire
The researcher designed two questionnaires, one to identify the opinions of those working in sports programs on Egyptian television, such as presenters, directors and preparers of sports programmes, and the second to identify the opinions of female and girl viewers of sports programmes.
Exploratory study:
The researcher applied the survey during the period from 1/9/ 2022 to 15/9/2022 on a random sample of (5) sports program workers and a random sample of (10) sports program viewers from outside the basic research sample with the aim of:
- Ensure the sample’s clarity and understanding of the questionnaire phrases
- Explain how to answer the questionnaires
Basic study:
The researcher applied the basic study in the period from 20/9/2022 to 20/11/2022, and the questionnaire was applied to the basic sample of the research, which consisted of (15) individuals working in sports programs and (30) women and girls who watched sports programs.
Conclusions and recommendations
First: conclusions
In the light of the research objectives and within the limits of the research sample and through statistical processing of the data and the presentation and discussion of the results, the following conclusions could be reached:
1- Sports programs on local channels on Egyptian television do not encourage Egyptian women to practice sports.
2- The Nile Sports Channel is the best TV channel with interest in sports programs compared to the first, second and third channels.
3- The sports programs on the Nile Sports Channel are the most watched sports programs in relation to the sports programs on the first, second and third channels.
4- Sports programs on TV channels focus on championships and competitions at the expense of the sports practice aspect.
5- Most of the categories that watch sports programs for women regularly are housewives, followed by working women, then students
6- The dates for transmitting sports programs and the time allotted for them compared to other programs are appropriate to a medium degree.
7- Acquiring new hobbies and knowledge is the most reason why women watch sports programmes.
8- The best forms preferred by Egyptian women in sports practice programs are Swedish exercises accompanied by music (Aerobics, Zumba).
9- Egyptian women prefer that the presenter of the sports program be a woman.
10- The best times for women to exercise are the evening period followed by the morning period.
11- The housewife prefers to broadcast sports programs in the morning, while the working and student women prefer to broadcast these programs in the evening.
12- The working woman, the housewife, and the student need to exercise daily, and exhaustion or lack of time does not affect her desire to exercise.
13- Egyptian women know very well that sports have health, psychological and aesthetic values.
14- The most preferred types of sports for women are walking, running, Swedish exercises, aerobics, and Zumba.
15- Egyptian women prefer to watch local and international sports together.
Second: Recommendations
Depending on the results of the study and its conclusions, and within the limits of the research sample, the researcher recommends the following:
1- Expedite the creation of a specialized sports program for women’s sports.
2- Increasing the area of current sports programs and paying attention to sports practice programs that raise women’s motivation towards sports.
3- The sports practice programs aimed at Egyptian women should be in the form of exercises accompanied by music, because this type of sport is preferred for women.
4- That sports programs focus on providing solutions to address the problem of obesity among women.
5- Adjusting the dates of sports programs directed to Egyptian women to be in the evening and afternoon periods.
6- Resorting to sports media with the latest global formats that contain forms of women’s exercise in order to encourage Egyptian women to practice sports.
7- Allocate sports programs for housewives in the morning, and in the evening for working and student women.
8- Taking into account the specialized professional preparation in the field of sports for workers in sports programs (preparers - presenters - directors).
9- Focusing on increasing Egyptian women’s awareness of the importance of sport and its positive impact through sports programmes.
10- That the sports programs presented on television should work to support the sports institutions in the country and to reveal sports talents, while presenting proposals to solve the problems that hinder the progress of the sports institutions in the country.
11- Sports programs should be planned according to a future vision in order to activate and develop sports programs.
12- Women’s sports programs should pay attention to all stages of women’s lives, and also appeal to women in rural and remote areas.
13- There should be sports programs for women that are offered daily, not weekly.
14- Sports programs should have a positive role in revealing sports talents in schools, clubs and youth centers.
15- Sports programs should pay attention to explaining the educational steps and laws for various sports.
16- That the sports programs present the modern sports practiced by women, such as women’s football, wrestling, synchronized swimming...etc.
17- Women’s sports programs should serve as media outlets for women’s sports tournaments in various individual and team sports.
18- Sports programs should focus on shedding light on Egypt’s Olympic champions in the appropriate manner, to serve as an ideal for young athletes in the junior stages.
19- Interest in presenting and telling the stories of sports heroes throughout Egyptian history, from ancient to modern times
20- Increasing interest in sports programs for women, the elderly, children and special needs.
