Abstract

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an inflammatory systemic illness that affects both small and large joints. Its progression causes joint damage and deformity, as well as variable degrees of deterioration and limitations in daily tasks. As a result, RA may be a risk factor for sarcopenia, which is described by muscle mass loss and a decrease in muscle strength. Diagnosis of sarcopenia is based on EWGSOP. Sarcopenia has a major impact on patients with RA with many contributing factors like: disease itself, the drugs used in the treatment and the inactivity that further increase the functional disability.
Obesity is a public health issue defined as a BMI of 25 or higher. Obesity is thought to contribute to inflammation and autoimmune diseases such as RA.
Sarcopenic obesity (SO) is an illness characterized by muscle loss mixed with increasing body fat, resulting in a loss of strength, function, and quality of life. This combination may occur in RA patients due to the inflammatory process, immobilization, joint discomfort, and deformity.
The aim of this work is to study the prevalence of sarcopenia, obesity, and SO in female patients with RA and the relation between obesity and sarcopenia in RA.
