The subject of this study is ” Shams al-Nahar play by Tawfiq al-Hakim: a pragmatic study ”. In order to explore its connotations and purposes, the research has been devoted to clarifying the theoretical framework of the pragmatic study through language and terminology, its origins, development and trends, and the basic topics of signs, verbs, speech and arguments. Then the research dealt with the technical framework of the play by presenting an overview of its author, Tawfiq al-Hakim, and the elements of its artistic construction, such as construction, attitudes, nature of characters, time, place. Then the research moved to conducting pragmatic analysis on the text of the play, beginning with the internal and external references of the play through the statement of its contextual connotations, passing through the study of direct and indirect speech acts and their purpose, concluding with linguistic arguments in dialogue, conflict and educational situations, by classifying it into direct and indirect arguments, and indicating the extent of the influence of the argumentative act on the recipient, by monitoring the extent of the change in his behavior. The most prominent results of this study were that the pragmatic approach is the best and most comprehensive approach for analyzing all the elements of the theatrical text, by investing the similarities between the investigations of the pragmatic study and the elements of the artistic construction of the play. To uphold the value of work, moral reform, the righteousness of the ruler, and the responsibility of the individual towards the group.
