Abstract

Weaning of patients from the mechanical ventilator is always challenging for clinicians because recognition of the adequate time of weaning is complicated and difficult. Both premature or delayed extubation from the mechanical ventilator after cardiac surgery prolong the duration of mechanical ventilation and the intensive care unit (ICU) length of stay and increase morbidity and mortality. Weaning failure after cardiac surgery can be due to both cardiac and noncardiac causes. Therefore, a thorough evaluation of the underlying cardiac condition, as well as other factors, is mandatory. Some parameters were shown to be useful during the weaning process to assess the dynamic reaction of the cardio-circulatory system to the progressive reduction of ventilatory support. These indicators may therefore be helpful in anticipating the patient’s chances of successful weaning and guiding the weaning process.
