Abstract

Suicide is a serious public health issue, but it can be avoided. Substance abuse and mental disorders, such as borderline personality disorders, are risk factors. Every year, approximately 800,000 people commit suicide, with many more attempting suicides. Every suicide is a tragedy that affects entire families, societies, and nations, as well as the people who are left behind. Suicide affects people of all ages, and it was the second leading cause of death among 15–29-year-olds worldwide in 2016.
Borderline personality disorder (BPD), also known as emotionally unstable personality disorder, is a mental illness characterized by a long-term pattern of unstable relationships, distorted sense of self and strong emotional reactions. Personality disorders are estimated to be present in more than 30% of individuals who die by suicide.
Substance abuse is an important risk factor for suicide. Clear risk factors for suicide in people with drug use disorders, on the other hand, are less well understood.
Axis I/axis II comorbidity is also common and there is particular interest in the comorbidity of borderline personality disorder with substance abuse. The well-documented comorbidity of substance abuse with borderline personality disorder, increases patients’ risk for impulsive suicidal behavior and for impaired judgment.
In this comparative cross-sectional study 150 addict patients (75 patients with BPD) were collected from The National Center for Treating Addiction, Ismailia Governorate.
To assess suicidal risk among substance use disorder patients with borderline personality disorder.
