Abstract

COVID-19 is an inflammatory disease caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which can manifest as a broad spectrum of symptoms ranging from few or no symptoms to severe pneumonia that may evolve to acute respiratory distress syndrome and death.
In the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic the proportion of confirmed cases among children was relatively small and it was thought that children were rarely affected by SARS-CoV-2.
Subsequent studies have consistently shown that children and adolescents are susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection, yet a large percentage of children are either asymptomatic or pre-symptomatic.
