Abstract

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) was defined as the presence of fat in the liver (hepatic steatosis) either on imaging or on liver histology after the exclusion of secondary causes of fat accumulation in the liver (e.g., significant alcohol consumption, certain medications, and other medical conditions).
NAFLD was one of the most important causes of liver disease worldwide and will probably emerge as the leading cause of end-stage liver disease in the coming decades, with the disease affecting both adults and children. The epidemiology and demographic characteristics of NAFLD vary worldwide, usually parallel to the prevalence of obesity, but a substantial proportion of patients are lean.
Large number of patients with NAFLD with potential for progressive liver disease creates challenges for screening, as the diagnosis of NASH necessitates invasive liver biopsy. Furthermore, individuals with NAFLD have a high frequency of metabolic comorbidities and could place a growing strain on health-care systems from their need for management. While awaiting the development effective therapies, this disease warrants the attention of primary care physicians, specialists and health policy makers.
In human trials, intermittent fasting had been shown was equally effective as daily calorie restriction for causing weight loss in obese subjects, intermittent fasting was a key area of interest because of its relevance to real world situations; during the holy month of Ramadan it was obligatory for all adult Muslim’s to abstain from the consumption of food and drink from sunrise until sunset. It is widely reported that body weight and body mass index are reduced during the fasting period in both males and females.
The aim of this study is to assess short term effect of intermittent fasting on various biochemical and anthropometric measurements in Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) patients.
A prospective study was conducted during the month of Ramadan in May/ June 2017 (Islamic year 1438) . 98 selected NAFLD patients was recruited from Talkha central hospital and (Society For Care Of Hepatic Patients in Mansoura).
98 NAFLD patients aged 18-70 years, will be recruited either recently diagnosed or well recognized NAFLD cases, on regular follow up clinic. All patients will undergo voluntary intermittent fasting for about 16 hours daily fasting with average (22-29) days.
