Abstract The brain is `a mass of`pinkish gray tissue`containing a neural`network, involving approximately, 10`billion nerve,cells, called`neurons. Glial`cells serve as`the brain’s support system, in`addition to blood`vessels and secretory`organs. Brain weight is three pounds aproximately, the`brain operates as`the central control`system for movement, sleep, hunger, and thirst. It`controls nearly every`vital activity necessary`for survival. Emotions`are controlled by`the brain: anger, fear, joy, love, elation, contentment, and`happiness`find their`origin inside the`brain. Furthermore, the brain`receives and interprets the`multitude of signals`being sent by`other parts`of`the body and the`outside environment.(”Brain; Tortora & Derrickson, 2010) The brain can`be divided into`different parts: the`brain stem and`cerebellum, the limbic system, and`the cerebral`hemispheres. Each`part has different`functions. Where, the`brain stem is`at the base of`the brain. It`controls basic bodily`functions such`as heartbeat`and breathing. The`nearby cerebellum controls`balance and posture. Breathing`and`staying upright are`things that we`normally do automatically. The`limbic system is`deep inside the brain. It`links the brain`stem and the cerebral`hemispheres. The`limbic system`includes structures with`key roles in memory (the`hippocampus) and`emotions (the amygdala) (McEwen, Nasca, & Gray, 2016) . |
