Abstract

The human corneal endothelial cells are non-regenerating mainly six-sided cell that cover the posterior aspect of Descemet membrane, it’s metabolically active and has a crucial role in keeping the corneal transparency by pumping H2O from stromal to the aqueous. Destruction of corneal ECs resulted from intraocular operation, glaucoma, traumas or diseases might lead to irreversible corneal eodema, because there’s little or no mitotic activity in the human corneal ECs following birth.
FECD is the commonest type of endothelial dystrophy. It’s manifested by severe corneal ECs loss, morphologic alterations in size & shape of residual cells, and at the same time formation of excrescences known as guttae.
