Abstract

The maxilla is a crucial structure of the midface, separating the oral, antral, and orbital cavities, providing support to the globes, lower eyelids, cheeks, lips, and nose. In addition, the maxilla plays a critical role in speech, swallowing, mastication, it is also critical for esthetics. So, the maxilla can be considered as the most important bony support of the midface skeleton. Thus, maxillary defects, such as those resulting from tumor resection and trauma can cause severe functional and cosmetic deformities.
The study was conducted on12 patients with ages ranging from 17to 60 years, all patients presented to the outpatient clinic of the department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Faculty of Dentistry, Minia University. patients were divided into two groups.
The collected data was tabulated and analyzed using the Statistical Program for Social Sciences (SPSS). SPSS Statistics version 19.0 software (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA) was used for the data analysis. Chi square test was used to compare between the two groups. Whereas, Cochran’s Q test was used to compare between two groups regarding Speech intelligibility, its suitability to receive dental implant and dental rehabilitation and Rate of post operative complications. A P-value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant.
We found the radial forearm free flap, either faciocuteneous or osteocuteneous, is still useful option in maxillary reconstruction in particular in small and medium defects. On the other hand, we found the fibula free flap is the flap of choice for the reconstruction of medium and large defects following maxillectomies.
