Abstract

Aim: This randomized clinical trial aimed to evaluate shade matching potential of monochromatic layering technique by means of a new single shade universal nanofillers resin composite (3M™ Filtek™ Universal) compared to polychromatic layering technique in restoration of fractured incisal angle using modified USPHS criteria and visual inspection using digital photography.
Material & methods: A total of 26 patients received 26 restorations i.e. (13) for each group. randomly using either; monochromatic layering technique using (Filtek™ Universal) or polychromatic layering technique using (Filtek™ Z350 XT). After cavity preparation, restorative materials were applied according to manufacturers’ instructions. Restorations were evaluated using modified USPHS criteria by two blinded assessors at baseline and after three-day post-operative. Chi square test was used to associate between the type of restorative material and shade matching potential; a P value ≤ 0.05 was considered statistically significant.
Results: Regarding shade matching measurement using modified USPHS criteria; intergroup comparison between both materials have shown statistically significant difference at baseline (P = 0.0001), while after 3 days there was no statistically significant difference (P = 0.2864). Intra-group comparison within Filtek universal have shown statistically significant difference between different follow-up periods (P = 0.0001). Intragroup comparison within Filtek Z350 XT have shown no statistically significant difference between different follow-up periods (P =0.2864). Regarding shade matching according to digital photography, intergroup comparison between both materials have shown no statistically significant difference at
baseline (P = 0.3592), while after 3 days there was statistically significant difference (P = 0.0071). Intra-group comparison within Filtek universal have shown
statistically significant difference between different follow-up periods (P = 0.0002). Intragroup comparison within Filtek Z350 XT have shown no statistically significant difference between different follow-up periods (P = 0.3592).
Conclusion: Monochromatic resin composite restorations showed satisfactory shade matching potential when compared to polychromatic resin composite restorations.
