Abstract

Neurodegeneration is the slow and progressive loss of neuronal cells in specified regions of
the brain and is the main pathologic feature of various neurodegenerative diseases.
Neurodegeneration causes disabling and debilitating conditions involving either impairment
of memory (dementia) or movement-related disabilities (ataxia), ultimately leading to death.
Some of the common neurodegenerative diseases include Alzheimer’s disease (AD),
Parkinson’s disease (PD), Huntington’s disease (HD) and amyotropic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Although the mechanism of the pathogenesis of these diseases is not understood to date, some
genetic and environmental factors have been implicated which confer susceptibility to these
diseases ( Takalo et al., 2013 ).
