Abstract

CD99 is a glycoprotein that was first isolated as an antigen that strongly reacted with T acute lymphoblastic leukemia specific antibodies. The protein participates in T cell adhesion and is expressed widely on a variety of hematopoietic and nonhematopoietic cell types. We used flow cytometry technique to determine the expression level of CD99 in 62 newly diagnosed TALL patients attending the adult and the pediatric Hematology/Oncology Clinic of the National Cancer Institute. Patients were followed up for the presence of minimal residual disease at day 15 and day 42 of the induction treatment. As a control group, 20 age and sex matched healthy people were enrolled in our study. Results showed that CD99 was expressed in all the patients and not expressed in controls. Correlations between CD99 expression and different clinical and laboratory data of patients revealed no impact on different data apart from the age, which showed a fair significant correlation and this significance disappears when comparing adults and pediatrics regarding CD99 expression. With follow up, we found that CD99 expression had a prognostic significance, but further studies should be done on a larger scale of patients concerning its prognostic impact
