Abstract

Opioid dependence pause a major problem in Egypt nowadays. After the introduction of prescription opioids, its prevalence is skyrocketing. Behavioral changes are often seen with substance dependence, specially opioids. The purpose of this study is to assess the presence of pathological eating attitudes among patients with opiate dependence in the pretreatment and during the recovery phases. The study included 90 subjects, who were divided into three groups, group 1; 30 subjects diagnosed with opioid dependence, group 2; subjects during recovery phase from opiate dependence and group 3; 30 healthy controls. They were assessed using: 1- Semi structured interview for psychiatric and addiction history. 2- Structured clinical Interview for DSM-IV AXIS I Disorders (SCID-I). 3- Addiction Severity Index (ASI) . 4- Eating Attitude Test 26 (EAT-26). The results showed 63.3% (n=19) and 33.3% (n=10) over the cutoff score of EAT- 26 versus 3.3% (n=1) in control group. These differences statistically were highly significant. Other significant differences were found among the subscales of the EAT-26. In conclusion, dysfunctional eating patterns are quite evident in the opioid dependence, during intake and recovery. Taking such changes in feeding habits and nutritional status is paramount to construct a comprehensive management plan when treating opioid dependence and during recovery to prevent relapses
