Abstract

Acute and chronic wounds are a common health problem. The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of topical application of human placental extract (HPE) in comparison to honey and solcoserylR on rat dermal wound healing. Excised wounded rats were classified into three batches; for determination of wound area and biochemical parameters, hydroxyproline level or histopathological examination. Each batch was classified into five groups and treated as follow; normal saline (150 æl/animal), honey (0.5 ml / animal), SolcoserylR (150 æl/animal), human placental extract (HPE) (50 æl / animal) or (HPE) (250 æl / animal). Wound closure was enhanced by honey, solcoserylR and HPE, whereas closure time was decreased. Blood glutathione level, plasma catalase activity and tissue hydroxyproline level was consistently increased by all tested drugs. While, Plasma malondialdehyde level was decreased. Hematological and histopathological enhancement were observed. Better effects were observed by treatment with 250 æL HPE compared to the lower dose (50 æL). The results show that HPE, honey and solcoserylR produced different actions on the various phases of wound repair
