Abstract

This study was conducted to assess the efficacy of weight bearing exercise on bone mineral density in post mastectomy patients receiving chemotherapy. Thirty post mastectomy female patients receiving chemotherapy with ages ranged from 30 - 45 years were selected randomly and divided into two equal groups each group contain 15 patients. The study group received weight bearing exercise in addition to chemotherapy while control group received only chemotherapy. Patients in both groups were assessed using dual energy X - ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) to measure bone mineral density (BMD). The results of this study showed significant increase in BMD in the study group while there was significant decrease in BMD in the control group who received only chemotherapy without weight bearing exercise which leads to bone loss. It was concluded that weight bearing exercise was an effective modality in improving BMD in post mastectomy patients receiving chemotherapy
