The Direct Displacement-Based Design (DDBD) is a procedure that has been developed over the past fifteen years in order to solve the problems of the current Force-Based Design (FBD). The main aim of this research is to prepare an investigation on the direct displacement-based seismic design of reinforced concrete structures which can be implemented in the Egyptian code concerning seismic design. In order to check the suitability of the Direct Displacement Based Design (DDBD) procedure when applied to the seismic design of different reinforced concrete structures, a given prototype concrete structures, seismic input level and performance target are initially defined. Then, both the design procedures (FBD and DDBD) are applied, and the design base shear and maximum story displacement are obtained. A comparative parametric study was also carried out to evaluate the impact of the different variables on the validation of the DDBD approach such as building height, zone factor, and seismic performance level. Capacity spectrum methods presented in ATC 40, 1996 have been applied in order to verify the performance of the designs that resulted of the application of DDBD. Briefly; this study shows that the DDBD approach can be successfully applied to vertically regular reinforced concrete structures up to 16 floors. The proposed method shows its effectiveness in estimating the base shear and target displacement
