Abstract

A study was carried out at the Nursery of Ornamental Horticulture Department, Faculty of Agriculture, Cairo University, Giza, Egypt, during three successive seasons: 2010/2011, 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 to investigate the following points: Effect of seasonal variations, effect of different fertilizer treatments (organic as compost and chemical fertilizers as potassium sulfate) and effect of sowing dates (Oct., Feb., Mar. and Apr.), organic, chemical fertilization on growth, flowering and the chemical composition of Carthamus tinctorius L. plants in order to produce flowering stems with high quality. In the first experiment: twelve sowing dates (1st July 2011 till 1st June 2012) were done. The data indicated that the seasonal variations had a highly significant effect on plant growth. The best sowing date for safflower plants was the period from Nov. till Feb. for producing the best growth characters. In the second experiment: the effect of different fertilizer treatments (organic as compost at the rates of 100, 200 or 400gm/pot 30cm, chemical fertilization as potassium sulfate at the rates of 5 or 7.5gm/pot 30cm) and a mixture from potassium sulfate (2.5gm) plus ammonium nitrate (5gm) plus compost at the rate of 100gm/pot 30cm were done
