Abstract The high impact of infection on daily clinical practice has promoted research into more accurate diagnostic and therapeutic methods.Imaging studies such as X- ray, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) show abnormalities caused by morphologic changes. These abnormalities can only be detected at advanced stages of disease so morphologic changes imaging does not really contribute to an early diagnosis. Nuclear medicine imaging is based on changes in function, rather than morphology. A variety of radiopharmaceuticals such as gallium-67 citrate and radiolabeled products of antigranulocyte monoclonal antibodies are used for scintigraphic detection of infection and inflammation. However, these radiopharmaceuticals still cannot distinguish between infection and inflammation because they are not bacteria specific. Infection specific |
