Abstract Among all technologies of the solar energy, parabolic trough technology is the most mature one. In this study, the effect of the tracking system configuration on the performance of the solar field of an advanced stand-alone solar - desalination unit is discussed. A computer program was developed in MATLAB R2012B® to simulate the performance of the plant throughout the year by applying different tracking configurations on the collectors. The PTCs were analyzed optically and thermally. Two other thermal models were provided for the piping network and the thermally stratified storage tank. The models of all components were combined together in a transient model to evaluate the transient performance of the plant throughout one year of continuous operation with a time step of one minute. The simulation plots of the plant throughout one year of continuous operation were presented. The effect of tracking system on the required aperture area of the PTCs to fulfill a certain load, and on the number of annual operation hours was discussed |
