Abstract

This in vitro study was carried out to evaluate the stress distributionaround short implants assisting partial overdenture using two types ofattachment for maxillary Kennedy Class I. The models were prepared to simulate the oral cavity. Oral mucosasimulation was carried out by adding an even layer of 2 mm resilientmaterial over the ridge area. On the epoxy models, two short implants with two types of attachmentwere used as follow:group AIn the position of the first molar in both sides, one implant 5 mmlength with 4.8 mm diameter was placed in each side, with a locatorattachment in the right side, and a ball and socket attachment in the left side. group BIn the position of the first molar in both sides, one implant 5 mmlength with 6.2 mm diameter was placed in each side, with a locatorattachment in the right side, and a ball and socket attachment in the left side. Removable partial overdenture with middle palatal strap design andRPI clasp was used. Grooves and tunnels were made in the models to facilitate strain gaugemeasurements. Strain gauges were installed, opposing to the buccal andpalatal surfaces of each implant. A digital loading device was used to apply 200 N vertical load and 40N oblique load at 45 degrees on the partial overdenture of each group on themodel. The strain was measured and recorded with digital strain-meter andrecorded.
