Abstract Proximal Femoral fractures are common in elderly. Their incidence had increased due to the increased life expectancy and osteoporosis. Over half of fractures of the proximal part of femur are inter-trochanteric fractures. By 2040, the incidence is estimated to be doubled. The majority of the trochanteric fractures occur due to direct trauma, as simple falling is the leading cause of fractures. These fractures occurring in elderly patients carry the risk of prolonged immobility and recumbency. Therefore the treatment should be so planned as to encourage union without deformity and at the same time allow early mobilization.Dynamic hip screw (DHS) is commonly used for treating stable intertrochanteric fractures. DHS complications include shortening, medialisation of the distal fragment; implant cut-outs, uncontrolled lateralisation of the proximal fragment, and varus collapse. To overcome these problems a locking plate and screw system has been developed. The locking compression plate is the combination of two completely different anchorage technologies in one implant. |
