Abstract Operational Modal Analysis (OMA) is with no doubt one of the most important engineering fields nowadays. It can be used in the assessment of modal properties (i.e., Fundamental period) of existing buildings under ambient vibrations. This study aims to propose a novel equation for the empirical estimation of fundamental natural period of shear wall moment resisting frames. As a consequence, a laboratory model was tested under various vibration techniques. In addition, several devices are used to extract modal parameters from output response of the existing structure in situ. Finally, a validation of the numerical techniques used for the modal parameters extraction will be performed by comparing the results taken from ambient vibration responses to results acquired by finite element method (FEM). Besides, an infield study will be performed on several building with different heights and structural systems such as moment resisting frames (MRF) and shear wall moment resisting frames (SWRF). Depending on the modal parameters extracted from the existing structures, a regression analysis will be performed for the derivation of a new proposed equation for estimating the fundamental periods of the mid-rise moment resisting frame buildings. |
