Abstract Synthesis of sodium salt of 1-carboxy 4-acrylamidobenzene sulfonamide Na-C4ABS, then grafting onto sodium alginate was performed. The synthesis of grafted Naalg-g-NaC4ABS was proven by FTIR and studying its surface morphology by using SEM. Synthesis of grafted copolymer Naalg-g-Psty and its characterization was done via FTIR, 1H-NMR and SEM analysis. The effect of different grafting parameters onto the grafting process was reported as, monomer concentration, initiator concentration, time and temperature. Different applications had been performed onto both grafted copolymers Naalg-g-NaC4ABS and Naalg-g-Psty with different G%. Both grafted copolymers have good adsorption ability for metal ions; Cu2+, Ni2+, Co2+and Cr6+ ions. Both grafted copolymers showed adsorption for both anionic and cationic dyes. A significant increase observed for cationic dye adsorption with increasing grafting percentage. The grafted copolymer Naalg-g-Psty had good antimicrobial activity. As for Bacillus subtilis (G+), the grafted copolymer (NaAlg-g-PSty) 200 G% shows inhibition zone diameter of 11 mm.mg−1 and (NaAlg-g-ST) 78 G% of 9 mm.mg−1. While, as for Neisseria gonorrhoeae (G-), both grafted copolymers showed inhibition zone diameter of 11 mm.mg−1. |
