Abstract

This study was designed to evaluate the impact of bimaxillaryorthognathic surgery on the short term soft tissue changes of the facial structures using laser scanner three-dimensional facial acquisition and two types of three dimensional analysis.
Fifteen patients were selected for this study with skeletal class III malocclusion that required surgical correction of the maxilla and mandible in an esthetically acceptable position.
A Le Fort I maxillary advancement with or without maxillary impaction and a bilateral sagittal split osteotomy were performed under general anesthesia. By mobilizing and down-fracturing of the maxilla and fixation through four titanium plates in the preplanned position and sagittal splitting the mandible with a set of chisels to allow for repositioning the distal segment in the correct occlusal position and desired position and fixation of the mandible using three titanium screws bilaterally.
A three dimensional acquisition of the craniofacial structures was obtained by a laser surface scanner and Cone Beam Computed Tomography CBCT preoperatively and postoperatively after 6 months.
