Abstract This research study investigates the efficiency of different schemes for strengthening Vierendeel trusses T-joints fabricated from connecting back-to-back hollow sections as a chord to single hollow section as a branch under the action of axial forces and bending moments. The examined design aspects included both joints stiffnesses and strengths. To achieve these objectives, finite element models for unreinforced joints were initially developed and verified against the results of previously performed experimental work. Then, following the same modeling approach, different finite elements for joints strengthened with different proposed schemes were developed. These joints were subjected to axial and bending loading conditions to assess their efficiency in strengthening the joints. Finally based on the outcome of this study work, the most efficient scheme for strengthening joints was determined, and a parametric study was carried out to determine the design aspects of this scheme. |
