Abstract

A significant recurrence rate and a relatively short overall survival time characterise the current state of ovarian cancer treatment. There is an immediate need for better therapy methods, particularly maintenance therapies. This study’s findings that oestrogen and progesterone receptors are expressed at variable degrees in primary tumours provide credence to the use of early neuroendocrine maintenance treatment in the first-line context, after conventional chemotherapy for oestrogen and/or gonadotropins positive cancer. Given the scarcity of maintenance antiangiogenetic drugs like Bevacizumab and PARP inhibitors in our region, this is of immense importance.
More research is needed on the expression of oestrogen and progesterone receptors and the use of aromatase inhibitors in people with HGOC. Patients’ quality of life would vastly improve with the use of endocrine therapy due to the softer treatment regimen, postponed chemotherapy, and increased treatment-free interval. Prospective investigation of the efficacy of primary herceptin, either alone or in conjunction with other targeted medications, would be very helpful in addressing the key difficulty of maintenance therapy: extending the time until the next treatment without compromising quality of life.
These results should be interpreted with caution due to the study’s limitations, such as its small patient sample size and lack of randomised control. It is necessary to conduct further clinical studies assessing biomarkers.
