Abstract

Lumbar canal stenosis is a significant cause of disability, and it is the most common cause of spinal surgery in the elderly. Objective: The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of Pulsed Electromagnetic Field on neurogenic claudication and pain in patients with lumbar canal stenosis. Design: A pretest–posttest randomized controlled trial. Setting: The study was conducted at Outpatient Clinic, Faculty of Physical Therapy, Cairo University, between April 2021 and May 2022.Methods: Thirty patients with chronic lumbar canal stenosis from both genders were randomly assigned into study and control groups. The study group received pulsed electromagnetic field therapy as well as selected physical therapy program, while the control group received the same selected physical therapy program only. Both groups received 12 sessions over 4 successive weeks. Standardized treadmill test was used to assess neurogenic claudication and the Arabic version of Short-Form McGill Pain Questionnaire (MPQ) was used to assess pain intensity. Results: There was a significant decrease in scores of Visual analogue scale (VAS), Present pain intensity (PPI) and total MPQscore in study group compared with that of control group post treatment (p < 0.001). There was no significant difference in time to first pain, final pain intensity and total walked distance between both groups post treatment (p > 0.05).Conclusion: Pulsed electromagnetic field is beneficial for alleviating pain despite having no advantage in improving neurogenic claudication in patients with chronic lumbar canal stenosis.
