Abstract Background: The core problems during the rehabilitation of a child with cerebral palsy (CP) are gross motor function delay as a problem of motor development and anxiety as a problem of socioemotional development. Adding a unique approach for motivation and relaxation at the same time through the auditory sense is considered in varied clinical conditions. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis was to determine the effect of twelve weeks combined physical therapy and music therapy program on gross motor development and anxiety levels in children with spastic CP. Methods: Fifteen children with spastic cerebral palsy from both sexes, age ranged from three to eight years participated in this study. Spasticity ranged from grade 1 to 1+ according to the Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS), They all received tailored physical therapy program in addition to music therapy program which lasted for one hour per session, three sessions per week for a period of three months. Evaluation included Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM-88) that detect change of the gross motor development and Modified Yale Preoperative Anxiety Scale (m -YPAS) that detect change regarding anxiety level, which were conducted pre and post intervention. Results: Post treatment values indicated significant improvement in the measured variables (p < 0.05). Conclusion: According to the results it can be concluded that adding music therapy to physical therapy sessions can lead to anxiety relief and thus enhance the gross motor function development in children with spastic CP. |
