Abstract

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak has significantly disrupted normal activities globally. Since the first cases were identified in December 2019 in Wuhan, China, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, a viral illness caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, has caused widespread morbidity and mortality. During this epidemic, people around the world were expected to encounter several mental health challenges, especially among ADHD adolescents.
Aim of the Work: We aim of the study to investigate the impact of coronavirus pandemics among ADHD adolescents in academic work; study anxiety and depression among ADHD adolescents during coronavirus pandemics and study the use of internet among ADHD adolescents during coronavirus pandemics.
Patient and Methods: Individuals were recruited and assessed for eligibility from the adolescent psychiatry clinic at Ain shams university and El-Maamoura Psychiatric Hospital that included 100 patients who were divided into two equal groups: group I included adolescents diagnosed as ADHD and group II included healthy volunteers’ adolescents from relatives of employees in hospital, with the same inclusion and exclusion criteria as the following.
Results: Regarding the ADHD group, before COVID-19, time of using internet at weekend was positively correlated with inattention (P value=0.015) and negatively correlated with hyperactivity (P value=0.065) and psychosomatic (P value=0.004). After COVID-19, time of using internet at weekend (hrs.) was positively correlated with inattention (P value=0.033). Regarding the control group, there was a statistically significant positive correlation between internet addiction score and inattention (P value=0.039). There was negative correlation between GAF score and each of inattention (P value=0.040) and psychosomatic (P value=0.027). There was negative correlation between avoidance and hyperactivity (P value=0.038). There was positive correlation between impact of event score and perfection (P value=0.021).
Conclusion: The present study focused on the impact of Covid-19 pandemics home confinement among ADHD adolescents on their academic work, anxiety and depression and internet addiction in comparison with non-ADHD cases during Covid-19 pandemic and also in comparison with before Covid-19 pandemic.
