Abstract Placenta previa accreta is created by abnormal trophoblast invasion of part or all of the placenta into the myometrium of the uterine wall (Usta et al., 2005). Placenta accreta spectrum, formerly known as morbidly adherent placenta, refers to the range of pathologic adherence of the placenta, including placenta increta, placenta percreta, and placenta accreta. Maternal morbidity and mortality can occur because of severe and sometimes life-threatening hemorrhage, which often requires blood transfusion. Rates of maternal death are increased for women with placenta accreta spectrum (Shellhaas et al., 2009) The placenta accreta spectrum has become an important contributor to severe maternal morbidity. The true incidence is difficult to ascertain, but likely falls near 1/1000 deliveries. This number seems to have increased along with the rate of risk factors (Carusi, 2018). |
