Abstract

This research investigates the impact of Efficient Working Capital Management (EWCM) on the profitability of listed industrial companies in the Egyptian Stock Exchange. EWCM is measured by number of days in inventories, average collection period, average payment period and cash conversion cycle. While ongoing research focuses mainly on return on total assets as a measure of profitability, this research measures the profitability by grossprofit margin, return on equity, earnings per share, return on assets and return on fixed assets, which are, in the opinion of the researcher, suitableto serve the purpose of this research. The published financial annual reports of 88 listed industrial companies over the period 2013-2018 are used in this research.
Results show a significant relationship between EWCM and profitability. Results show positive and significant impact of number of days in inventories, average collection period, average payment periodon gross profit margin, but not on return on assets neither on equityand a positive and significant impact of average collection period on return on fixed assets.
Therefore, this research concludes that working capital of listed industrial companies is not managed efficiently when profitability is measured by the overall profitability measures in terms of return on assets, return on equity and earnings per share, while it shows that it is managed efficiently in terms of gross profit marginandreturn on fixed assets.
