Abstract

Background: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is linked to an increased risk of
pregnancy problems, as well as later-life maternal cardio metabolic problems. Dietary and
physical activity modifications are important components for GDM management. The aim
of study was to evaluate the effectof lifestyle modification on pregnancy outcome among
GDM women. Design: A quasi-randomized controlled trialwas adopted. Sample:A
purposive samples of 150 GDM women were recruited. Two groups were constituted a
study and control group 75 each through random assignment allocation.Tools: Six tools
were utilized; interviewing questionnaire schedule, initial antenatal assessment and follow
up tool during pregnancy, intrapartum assessment sheet, postpartum assessment sheet,
neonatal gestational age assessment and designed protocol of care. Results: There was a
highly statistical significant difference in both groups regarding to fasting and random
blood glucose (p =0.001). The mean fasting blood sugar (FBS) as well as mean random
blood sugar (RBS) were higher in the control than in the study group. Pregnancy outcome
showed a highly statistical significant difference between both groups in relation to
recurrent monilia infection, premature rupture of membrane, and diabetic ketoacidosis
being higher among control group. In addition, cesarean section rate was higher among the
control group. On the other hand, neonatal outcome showed statistical significant
difference in relation to fifth minute Apgar score, newborn hypoglycemia, respiratory
distress syndrome, and neonatal admission to intensive care unit. Conclusion; providing
GDM women with lifestyle modification protocol of care was effective on improving the
pregnancy outcomes during pregnancy, labor and postpartum. As well as improving in
fasting and random blood sugar, but no effect on weight gain attained during pregnancy.
Recommendations: implementation of lifestyle modification for all pregnant women
suffering from GDM.
